Neighbourhoods
Checked September 2026.
Downtown Core
Office towers, the Stephen Avenue pedestrian stretch, and the +15 walkway system that lets you cross much of it indoors — genuinely useful in February and disorienting in July. Most of the larger hotels are here.
Stay here if you're in town for two nights and want to walk to dinner. Skip it if you want evening atmosphere: much of the core empties after six.
Beltline
Just south of downtown, centred on 17th Avenue SW. Restaurants, bars, small shops, and the liveliest evenings in the city. Walkable to downtown in fifteen minutes.
Stay here if you want to eat and drink within walking distance. Skip it if you're a light sleeper and end up on 17th itself.
Kensington
Across the Bow on the northwest side. Independent shops, a good bookshop, cafés with actual queues on Saturday mornings. Compact enough to cover in an hour and pleasant enough to stay two.
Connected to downtown by the Peace Bridge, the red one, about a twenty-minute walk.
Inglewood
The oldest neighbourhood in the city, east along 9th Avenue SE. Antique shops, a music venue or two, and some of the better restaurants. Bird sanctuary at the far end, which is quieter than it sounds and worth an hour in spring.
Stay here if you'd rather be somewhere with a bit of grain to it. Bear in mind the walk downtown is longer than the map implies.
East Village
Rebuilt over the last fifteen years along the river, with the central library at one end. Clean, new, and a little characterless in a way locals argue about. The riverside path here is the best short walk in the city centre.
Bridgeland
Small, on the hill northeast of downtown, with a cluster of restaurants along 1st Avenue NE and views back over the skyline. Quieter than Kensington and less visited. Our own favourite, which is not the same as saying it's the right base for a first trip.
A note on price. Hotel rates swing hard around events. During Stampede in July a room can cost triple what it does in April, and the same is true of any week with a large conference. If your dates are flexible by a week, check both.
